Words and Phrases on the Internet

First place to start is with some nomenclature.

Your USERNAME is the same as your ACCOUNT NAME. This is the part of your e-mail address before the @. This is the part that you chose when setting up the account. It is Case Sensitive so note what you use when creating the account.

Your full EMAIL ADDRESS will be USERNAME@themail.co.uk . Again your USERNAME is case sensitive so make sure you get it right.

The part after the @ in the e-mail address is the DOMAIN. Sometimes this is required when setting up a machine to connect.

Your PASSWORD was also chosen by you when you created the account.

We do not under any circumstances divulge passwords to accounts.
If you forget yours you will need to phone support with your username and the telephone number you registered your account with.

The DNS Server is the computer that resolves all the names that are used on the Internet. Every computer has an address associated with it. This takes the form of 4 numbers separated by fullstops (.). This is called an IP Address. Normally when connected to the Internet you don't need to type these in as the computer has an alias like www.microsoft.com or www.themail.co.uk. Each of these phrases is translated by the DNS into the appropriate IP Address. Only then will the names be resolved. The alternative is to always remember and type in the IP Addresses. Not Nice! The DNS Server itself is always referred to by its IP address? as there isn't an DNS Server available at that stage to resolve a name!

SMTP is the method by which you will be sending your mail to the big bad world. The letters stand for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol.

POP3 is the method by which you collect your mail. This requires your USERNAME and password before it will let you collect mail. POP stands for Post-Office Protocol.

POP Account can mean a range of things. In the normal scheme of things this is the same as your USERNAME. Unfortunately some e-mail packages do a slightly different version which is the combination of your USERNAME and the name of the POP3 server to form what looks like (BUT ISN'T) an e-mail address. Confusing!

The telephone number that you use to connect to themail depends on your modem.

kbps stands for kilo bits per second and is the standard way of measuring the speed of a modem or connection.
