Setting up your Dial-up Networking to connect to themail for Windows 95 and 98

Double click on "My Computer", and you should see an icon marked "Dial-Up Networking". Double click on this. You will get a new window with an icon marked "Make new connection".

Double clicking on this will bring up a dialog box. Fill in the section marked "Type a name for the computer you are dialing" with "themail internet connection" (or whatever you wish to call the connection). Ensure that the correct modem is selected in the "Select a modem" field. This should be selected automatically if your modem is set up correctly.

Click on "Next" - this will bring you to the section where you enter the phone number by which you connect to us. Enter the area code as 0845, and the telephone number as 0555555.

Click on the pull-down menu against Country Code and select United Kingdom (44). Click on the button labelled Next, then click on the Finish button. You should see a new icon appear in the dial-up networking folder, with the name "themail internet connection". Next, click once with the right mouse button on the themail internet connection icon and select Properties from the drop down menu. Within this screen, click on the tab marked "Server Types" (on earlier versions this can be a button).

In this screen you need to ensure that "Type of Dial-Up Server" is set to the following: Windows 95: "PPP, Windows 95, Windows NT, Internet" Windows 98: "PPP, Internet, Windows NT Server, Windows 98 Underneath this box will be a selection of tick boxes. Ensure that only TCP/IP is ticked and "unchanged" in the Allowed Network Protocols and that only Enable Software Compression is checked in the Advance Settings. Make sure that 'log on to network' IS NOT TICKED. Next, click on the button marked "TCP/IP Settings". Within this screen ensure that both the 'server assigned IP address' box and the 'server assigned nameserver addresses' box are both checked.

The options marked "Use IP header Compression" and "Use Default Gateway On Remote Network" should both be ticked. Click on "OK" until you are back at the Dial-Up Networking folder, which you should now close. You can now try connecting to our service. To do this simply double click the connection you have just created called 'themail internet connection'. The box below will appear.

Simply enter your themail username and password and click connect. Your modem will now begin dialing our service. Once it has contacted our server, your username and password will be checked automatically.

If your username and password are valid it will connect you to our service.
